About Spindleruv Mlyn / The Spindler Mill

Ever since ancient times the Giant Mountains and the dense woods here represented part of the Bohemian border. The discovery of rare minerals, precious metals and stones brought many people from the hinterland here, as well as foreigners. Some fifty miners, together with Spindler the miller, built the church of St. Peter (the patron of miners)and it was consecrated in 1793 when the town of Spindleruv Mlyn was founded. The mill was abandoned after the death of Spindler, the mines ceased activity and the inhabitants of the valley began to move to the mountains. When serfdom was abolished, the local people decided to take up pasture farming. When the return to nature, initiated by the French philosopher J. J. Rousseau, became fashionable, people began to move from the city to the mountains once more. When the owner of the estate, princ Harrach, had the idea of equipping his gamekeepers with Norwegian skis, he coincidentally began the local production of "boards of ash".
